As dogs age, their mobility and activity levels naturally shift. Progressive mobility loss and degenerative conditions can affect a dog's ability to move comfortably and engage in their favourite activities. If you're a pet owner facing these challenges, here's how to adapt to your dog's changing mobility. To care for a dog with changing mobility needs, it's crucial to recognise the specific condition affecting your pet and adapt your care accordingly.

  • Understanding Progressive Mobility Loss: Dogs can experience progressive mobility loss, a condition that worsens over time. Typically, it starts in the hind legs and progresses up the spine, eventually affecting the front legs as well.
  • Degenerative Myelopathy (DM): DM is the most common cause of progressive mobility loss, frequently observed in German Shepherds. It initiates with issues like nail scraping or hind leg "knuckling," leading to hind leg weakness and paralysis, eventually impacting all limbs. Sadly, DM is incurable and results in paralysis as it advances.
  • Cancer's Impact: While not a mobility condition per se, cancer can weaken a dog, reducing strength, stamina, and mobility. Tumors may press against nerves or develop in bones, limiting movement. The rate of cancer spread varies, but it can lead to weakness and paralysis.
  • Arthritis in Senior Dogs: Aging dogs may develop arthritis, experience discomfort from old injuries, or struggle with painful hips. This can result in a natural slowing down and changes in mobility. Support needs for senior dogs vary, from assistance with stairs to helping them stand.

Dog Wheelchairs

Here are some points to consider if you are interested in a wheelchair for your dog;

  • Purpose: The Walkin' Wheels dog wheelchair is designed to assist senior or disabled pets, enabling them to regain mobility and exercise, ultimately improving their quality of life.
  • Early Intervention: It's advisable to consider a wheelchair for your dog if they experience stumbling, balance issues, or fatigue, even if they are not completely paralyzed. Wheelchairs can provide vital support for dogs with various mobility issues.
  • Conditions Benefiting from Wheelchairs: Dogs with conditions such as hip dysplasia, arthritis, degenerative myelopathy (DM), paralysis, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), neurological problems, injuries, and the need for balance and stability can benefit from dog wheelchairs.
  • Usage: Dogs can use wheelchairs daily or on an as-needed basis, depending on their specific condition and requirements. Wheelchairs are particularly helpful for dogs recovering from injuries or surgery.
  • Size: The Walkin' Wheels wheelchair comes in four frame sizes (Mini, Small, Medium, Large) and can accommodate dogs ranging from 2 lbs. to 180 lbs. It is fully adjustable for width, height, and length, ensuring a customized fit for your dog.
  • Adaptability: The wheelchair should be adaptable to your dog's changing health needs. The Walkin' Wheels wheelchair can convert from a rear wheel to a four-wheel wheelchair with the addition of a Front Wheel attachment, offering support to both front and rear legs as required.
  • Wheel Types: The choice between foam wheels and air-filled tires depends on your dog's activity level and terrain. Foam wheels are durable and puncture-proof, suitable for various terrains. Air-filled tires provide a more natural suspension and are ideal for active dogs navigating rough terrain.
  • Benefits of a Fully Adjustable Wheelchair: A fully adjustable wheelchair offers versatility, allowing you to fine-tune the size and fit for your dog without the need for custom solutions.
